So, what is the difference between life coaching and counseling - and which one do I need?
As a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Life Coach - I get this question all the time. Life coaching and counseling can be profound and life changing. They are both meant to help an individual, couple or family to grow through support, interventions and reaching external and internal goals.
Here's a quick chart breakdown of the difference between the two professions....
As a therapist and coach - I have gone through years of formal education, have thousands of hours of supervised experience counseling and must abide by many ethical and legal standards. A life coach does not have to go through this level of training and does not have any board or legal responsibility to answer to.
I want you to know this so that you can keep this in mind when you are deciding to work with a coach or counselor. There are some amazing coaches that are truly changing lives...on the other hand there are some trained counselors that have lost their edge. I want you to be careful when deciding who to work with.
Always have a chat with the counselor or coach before you start working with them. Make sure you are comfortable with them and their style. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask for testimonials, ask around, look for credentials.
I hope this helps in helping you to understand the different between coaching and counseling. I'm here to answer your questions - just shoot me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
