I Have A Dream....For Your Marriage...
I hope all of you in the states enjoyed MLK day! For me, it was a productive and fun day hanging with my kiddos and hubby (mostly in the warmth of our house) - because it was freeeezzzinnnggg!
Reflecting on the day, I got curious and started looking up some of Martin Luther King, Jr's famous quotes…other than, "I have a dream…" So many of his quotes really speak to how we should live every day. He truly is an inspirational man.
One of my favorite quotes I found from MLK, Jr. is:
"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend."
So true in life and especially in marriage.
Sometimes we can feel that our spouse is our enemy. Maybe if they didn't cause so much aggravation or pain - then our lives would be better - then - maybe we couldn't figure out how to love them the way we once did.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. We cannot withhold showing our love and expect our spouse to come chasing after it. We have to show them unconditional, unselfish love until they are able to full accept and receive it.
It's so easy with our children - can you imagine withholding your kisses or hugs or conversation from your 5 year old son because they didn't listen to you, or because they did not respond the way you wanted them to?
Why can't it be this easy with our spouse. Well, for one, they are adults! They should know how to listen, how to communicate, how to love you, how to adore you, how to treat you….right?
Maybe, maybe not.
You and your spouse are probably doing the best you can. You may be modeling the relationship of your parents, you may be overwhelmed and are just trying to handle the stress, you may have been hurt in the past and are still trying to figure out a way past this….
Whatever it may be - today, I encourage you to show your spouse love and attention - even if you don't immediately get it back.
I'll finish today with another MLK, Jr. quote:
"Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase".
Have faith in yourself and your marriage. There is hope. I have personally witnessed couples who went from separation to re-igniting their passion and love for one another - and becoming a couple that others admire and envy.
That person who you feel in love with - is still there, somewhere. Make it your mission to take the first step every day and rediscover that person….
I would love to hear from you - let me know what you are doing to love unconditionally and take the first step towards reigniting your marriage each day. Just comment below.
